Open Water Thinking
Thinking—deep thinking, the kind that nourishes vitality—is like swimming in open water. It demands patience and stamina, surrender, a willingness to get out of one’s depth, to embrace discomfort, to make peace with one’s finitude. This kind of thinking cannot be taught, but it can be learned, via dialogue, and this is what I offer: guided conversation in pursuit of open-water thinking.
I work one-on-one and with small groups. The benefits include interpretive maturity, a confidence reasoning extemporaneously, facility using words and other media to probe your own beliefs—and, above all, a certain inner stillness.
To give the conversation structure I often use a syllabus, emphasizing fiction and recorded sound of an experimental bent. As the conversation unfolds we’ll adjust the syllabus to suit participants’ interests.
Many variations on the format are possible: workshops, retreats, writing groups, etc.
